Summary:In collaboration with the Regional Senior Leadership teams and under the medical direction of a qualified pathologist (MD), the laboratory manager is responsible for the administrative operation of the laboratories; the maintenance of all policies, procedures, and quality control practices; the management and supervision of the laboratory technical, clerical, and environmental staff; the administration of the department budget; and the maintenance of effective physician and inter/intradepartmental relations.
The Manager works collaboratively with and is a peer to the managers of BRL, the managers of Baystate Health clinical and anatomic pathology laboratories to meet system objectives and the needs of laboratory clients and their patients.
The Manager has the following responsibilities: direct oversight of the Worcester Satellite, Brockton, BNH, and BWH labs, including direct supervision of the technical lead, technical staff, and phlebotomists at the Worcester Satellite Lab. This Manager also serves as the Technical Supervisor ("TS") for testing done in Satellite Labs in Connecticut.
The incumbent is a member of the Clinical Services team in each region, and part of the BH Laboratory Leadership team. Incumbent reports to the Director of Systemwide Laboratory Operations. Responsible for three areas of accountability within the Department of Laboratory/Pathology; BNH laboratory, BWH laboratory, and BMLOC laboratory. Reporting directly to the incumbent are supervisors, clinical section leads, technologists, technicians, phlebotomists, lab assistants, and clerical staff in their respective area(s).
At the direction of the BH Senior Laboratory Leadership, develop and prepare goals and objectives which support the BH mission, principles, and goals.
Coordinate department orientation with new employees. Assist and/or conduct employee performance appraisals and payroll. Assist and/or conduct employee performance appraisals and payroll. Assist and/or perform corrective actions as needed with employees. Oversee department QA programs. Uses critical thinking skills and independent judgment to make departmental decisions.
As Safety Officer, is responsible for identifying and appraisal unsafe conditions and practices and evaluating the severity of accidents. Has authority to intervene whenever conditions pose an immediate threat to life or health or threaten damage to equipment or buildings. Responsible for coordinating the development and review of hazard control methods, procedures, and programs. Responsible for the communications of pertinent safety information to those directly involved.
Responsible for safety and implementing programs for safety, hazardous materials, infectious disease prevention, and fire safety management.
1) Responsible for the development and maintenance of the annual operating budget in all assigned areas, reviewing monthly and annual reports of income, expense, productivity, etc., and implementing necessary action to ensure budgetary compliance.
2) The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and coordination of staff regarding personnel issues, evaluation, position descriptions, scheduling, orientation, training, and staff development. In addition, the position is responsible for criteria-based performance evaluations, wage changes, disciplinary action, hiring, termination, and similar actions.
