Healthcare Assistant (20-25 Hours per Week)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, compassionate, and forward-thinking Healthcare Assistant to join the multidisciplinary team at Gourock Medical Practice.

We are a friendly and supportive practice serving our local community, with a team consisting of:

  • 5 GP Partners
  • 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners
  • 2 Practice Nurses
  • 1 Healthcare Assistant
  • An experienced and supportive administration team

Main Purpose of the Role

Working under the direction of the Practice Nurses and GPs, the Healthcare Assistant will support the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care. The post holder will contribute to health promotion, disease prevention, and the ongoing management of patients with long-term conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Undertake new patient health checks.
  • Measure and record clinical observations including:
    • Blood pressure
    • Pulse
    • Respiratory rate
    • Temperature
    • Height and weight
    • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Perform venepuncture.
  • Accurately record clinical observations within the practice clinical system.
  • Assist with infection prevention and control procedures.

Health Promotion

  • Promote healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Provide smoking cessation support and advice.
  • Encourage participation in national screening programmes.
  • Support patients with weight management and wellbeing advice.
  • Signpost patients to appropriate health, social care, and community services.

Patient Care

  • Treat all patients with dignity, respect, and compassion.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Obtain informed consent prior to carrying out procedures.
  • Recognise concerns or deterioration and escalat... e appropriately.
  • Provide reassurance and support to patients and carers.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records.
  • Effectively use electronic clinical systems.
  • Monitor and manage clinical stock and supplies.
  • Prepare and clean clinical rooms.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and appropriately calibrated.
  • Participate in audit activities as required.

Infection Prevention and Control

  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and effective clinical environment.
  • Dispose of clinical waste appropriately.
  • Correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE).

Safeguarding

  • Understand safeguarding responsibilities for children and vulnerable adults.
  • Report concerns in line with practice policies and procedures.
  • Complete all mandatory safeguarding training.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Work within agreed competencies and scope of practice.
  • Maintain professional boundaries.
  • Participate in annual appraisal and personal development.
  • Complete mandatory and role-specific training.
  • Support students and new staff where appropriate.

Quality Improvement and Governance

  • Participate in clinical audits.
  • Report incidents, accidents, and near misses.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Comply with practice policies and NHS standards.

Communication

Communicate effectively with:

  • Patients and carers
  • GPs
  • Nursing staff
  • Reception and administrative colleagues
  • Community services
  • Secondary care colleagues

Maintain clear, professional verbal and written communication at all times.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Compassionate and patient-centred approach
  • Flexible and reliable

Desirable

  • Previous experience in primary care
  • Venepuncture certification
  • NHS Health Check training
  • Experience supporting patients with long-term conditions
  • Chronic Disease Management training

Additional Information

  • Hours:

    20-25 hours per week
  • Working pattern: 4-5 days per week
  • The role includes early starts from 8:00am and late finishes up to 6:00pm.
  • Full training and support will be provided where appropriate.
