Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Department of Communication Studies is a vibrant community of 14 full‑time faculty with expertise across a range of communication subdisciplines, including interpersonal, organizational, health, environmental, digital, and instructional communication. Our researchers advance scholarship using social scientific, interpretive, and community‑engaged methodologies (including qualitative, rhetorical, auto/ethnographic, and narrative approaches). All department instructors leverage their diverse expertise to prepare students to build strong relationships, collaborate and lead effectively, craft audience‑centered messages, and drive meaningful change across varied contexts.

Teaching in the department emphasizes engaged and experiential learning, reflecting a commitment to the practical application of communication theory and concepts. The department’s BA program enrolls over 200 students, while the MA program serves approximately 20.

Position Summary

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in Communicating Innovation. We seek a colleague who connects communication to creativity, collaboration, and the adoption of new ideas, technologies, and practices – with a preference for scholars whose teaching and research interests may align with, but are not limited to:

  • Implementation of health, environmental, and science information, digital and emerging technologies, and social media in organizational settings and public partnerships.
  • Applied and critically‑reflexive approaches to communication theory and practice.
  • Communication advancements around technology – including digital engagement, artificial intelligence, and remote organizing.
  • Collaborative and community‑engaged methods for addressing emerging needs.
  • Evaluation of traditional and digital messaging, social networks, and organizational practices influencing adoption, engagement, and societal outcomes related to innovation.
  • Digital and transmedia storytelling in health, science, sustainability, technology, and related contexts.
Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold or anticipate a Ph.D. in Communication or a related field at the time of appointment (August 1, 2026).
