NCPK Teacher Assistant

Generation Ed is recruiting for a NCPK Teacher Assistant in head start and early head start programs. The position offers a competitive pay range of $20.07/hr – $20.07/hr.

General Description

It is the responsibility of the teacher assistant to plan, organize and direct the operation of programs for a specific group of children, providing a high-quality environment in which each child achieves the highest level of social, emotional, physical and intellectual competence. The classroom environment must be age‑appropriate and meet all Head Start and licensing standards (Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS) and others).

The assistant maintains a clean classroom, sweeping, wiping spills, removing trash and vacuuming rugs as needed.

A. Head Start Teacher Assistant Competencies
  • Planning and implementing learning experiences that advance intellectual and physical development, including literacy, phonemic awareness, language, vocabulary, early math, science, problem‑solving, and learning approaches.
  • Establishing and maintaining a safe, clean, healthy learning environment.
  • Supporting the social and emotional development of children.
  • Encouraging family involvement and supporting relationships between children and their families.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in organizing space, materials, and routines to create an engaging environment that encourages play, exploration, and learning.
  • Assist in developing and implementing an integrated program of activities, experiences and opportunities appropriate to the developmental levels of the children served.
  • Use community resources and age‑appropriate activities to enrich children’s classroom experience.
  • Ensure the classroom respects and reflects diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining an environment appropriate for children in adherence to HSPS, CLASS, NCPK, NAEYC and ECERS.
  • Perform any other job‑related tasks as assigned.
B. Teacher‑Child Interaction
  • Maintain effective communication with children that fosters physical, social, emotional and intellectual development.
  • Use questioning, probing and problem‑solving during interactions that promote learning.
  • Interact with children at eye level using a pleasant, encouraging voice.
  • Assist in providing opportunities for children to understand, acquire and use verbal and non‑verbal communication.
  • Assist in providing opportunities for children in small and large groups and individually.
  • Use appropriate conflict resolution techniques for developmental level.
  • Provide smooth transitions between activities without children waiting.
  • Assist children with self‑help activities.
C. Adult‑Adult Interaction
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with co‑workers through open communication, resource sharing and professional development support.
  • Develop supportive relationships with parents, respecting their values and sharing information about children’s developmental stages.
  • Maintain a cooperative workplace atmosphere with a pleasant, cooperative attitude.
D. Assessment
  • Assist in observing and assessing each child in each developmental area, using an assessment instrument selected by the Education Committee.
  • Participate in IEP staffing.
  • Participate in cross‑component meetings to develop strategies for promoting optimal development in each child.
E. Parent Involvement
  • Communicate program activities to parents regularly (newsletter, activity calendars).
  • Assist in conducting and documenting parent conferences and/or home visits as needed.
  • Orient parents to classroom and attend parent group functions.
  • Communicate with parents about expectations and opportunities for positive program involvement.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with parents.
F. Program Management
  • Maintain a clean and organized learning environment.
  • Use all available resources to ensure effective classroom operation.
  • Immediately report all cases of suspected child abuse or neglect to the Center Director.
  • Write and submit accurate, timely reports.
  • Request supplies and equipment when needed and according to procedure.
