Estimated Hiring Salary Range
: $50,376.00 - $57,573.00 Full Salary Range
: $43,755.00 - $78,299.00 Annually

About the Water Resources Department & Stormwater Management Division

Greensboro’s Water Resources Department is responsible for protecting public health and the environment by managing drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Our department is committed to high standards, reliable service, and long‑term sustainability.

The Stormwater Management Division plays a key role in reducing flooding, improving water quality, and ensuring compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. The division manages stormwater infrastructure, conducts environmental monitoring, investigates pollution concerns, and works closely with residents and businesses to protect Greensboro’s waterways.

As part of this team, you’ll contribute directly to environmental stewardship and responsible city planning.

About the Role

As a Stormwater Monitoring Technician
, you will:

  • Collect and analyze water quality data from streams and stormwater systems
  • Conduct routine inspections of stormwater control measures (SCMs)
  • Investigate pollution complaints, spills, and runoff concerns
  • Identify and eliminate illicit discharges and illegal connections to the storm sewer system
  • Assist with tracking spills for partner agencies and regulatory bodies
  • Inspect industrial facilities for stormwater compliance
  • Monitor streams during both wet and dry weather conditions
  • Maintain, calibrate, and care for sampling and monitoring equipment
  • Evaluate and manage monitoring data and prepare technical reports
  • Apply local, state, and federal regulations to protect stormwater quality
  • Respond to citizen requests and provide technical assistance to internal and external clients

Physical & Work Environment Requirements:

  • Fieldwork in stream beds, storm drains, and other potentially hazardous areas
  • Work during inclement weather and outside standard daytime hours when needed
  • Carrying equipment up to 25 lbs. over uneven or sloped terrain
  • This position is NON-EXEMPT under FLSA

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Directly related experience in Pollution Prevention, Water Quality monitoring, and/or Stormwater Management, Stormwater inspections, and/or Stormwater Control Measures.
  • Proficient with computer applications such as MS Office, etc.
  • Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Geography, Chemistry, Ecology, Zoology, Geology, or Natural Resources related
  • Related experience and/or education in Pollution Prevention, Water Quality monitoring, and/or Stormwater Management
  • Related experience or education in Stormwater inspections of industrial facilities and Stormwater Control Measures
