Job Title: Tool Designer
Location: Greensboro, NC
Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, plans and designs manufacturing processes in an industrial plant. May improve production methods, determine manufacturing capacity, and set up production schedules. Provides support in the design, fabrication, modification and evaluation in support of manufacturing operations such as machining, metal forming, plastics processing, welding and brazing, assembly, and material handling. May assist in time and cost estimates.
Responsibilities- Typical requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and one to four years of experience.
- Assign work to drafters and technicians, technical writers, engineering technicians, and machine shop personnel as required.
- Perform design / modification of assembly jigs, detail tooling, scaffoldings/work platforms/ground handling equipment and any other tooling.
- Investigate design-engineering changes to maintain engineering configuration and initiate action.
- Act as design & drawing checker/reviewer.
- Develop and maintain technical relationships / partnerships with customers, suppliers, peers, partners and team members to develop collaborative plans and execute on projects.
- Coordinate and communicate regularly with experts in organizations around the world.
- Support initiatives on engineering excellence, employee development, mentoring, and customer engagement.
- Experience in design & design modification of different production tools such as assembly jigs, drill jigs, location jigs, portable mechanical equipment, and work platforms.
- Experience in performing conceptual tool designs.
- Knowledge of tool manufacturing processes.
- Familiar with aerospace industry, military and government specifications, handbooks, and standards. Able to read, understand, and interpret advanced engineering drawings and specifications.
- Experience in creation of complex tool fabrication drawings, weldments, sub-assembly, and assembly drawings.
- Experience in conducting tool design reviews with cross-functional teams.
- Expertise in CAD/CAM and CATIA, ability to build and manipulate data sets.
- Expertise in Teamcenter PLM system.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams spread across multiple products and locations within Boeing and external partners.
- Self-starter with a positive attitude, high ethics, and a track record of working successfully under pressure in a time-constrained environment.
- Fluent in spoken and written English with excellent communication style.
- Flexible with high tolerance for organizational complexity and ability to work with partners across different cultures and time zones.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to prepare comprehensive reports, proposals, Statements of Work, and connect technology to business considerations.
- Familiar with assembly processes, customer-supplier knowledge, design/produce processes, engineering process improvement methods, manufacturing methods, product structure, and operational analysis.
- Knowledge of design, modification, and disposition of manufacturing tools to support the build of production parts.
- Some experience with production tool strings, assembly instructions, tool order creation, tool liaison, and GD&T.
Bachelor’s degree with 12–15 years of experience, or Master’s degree with 10 or more years of experience in Mechanical, Tooling, Production, or Industrial Engineering.
Compensation$80,000.00 – $90,000.00 per year
