About the Water Resources Department & Engineering Division

The Water Resources Department is responsible for protecting Greensboro’s water quality and managing stormwater, wastewater, and drinking water systems. The department is committed to resilient infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and sustainable development.

Within the department, the Engineering Division supports responsible growth by reviewing development plans, enforcing stormwater and floodplain standards, and ensuring City infrastructure meets long‑term performance and safety expectations. The division plays a critical role in aligning development activity with environmental stewardship and regulatory requirements.

About the Role

As a Civil Engineer
, you will provide technical expertise in storm drainage, stormwater management, and floodplain engineering, with primary responsibilities including:

• Reviewing developer and consultant plans, studies, specifications, and cost estimates for compliance with City policies and ordinances
• Supporting the post‑construction site runoff control program
• Assisting the Engineering Supervisor with ordinance updates to reflect new or upcoming State and EPA requirements
• Responding to technical questions from customers, engineers, and internal stakeholders
• Collaborating with the Engineering Supervisor to develop engineering solutions and alternatives for complex challenges
• Supporting economic development initiatives and City‑led projects through technical review and consultation
• Participating in project review, prioritization, and coordination across Development Services

This role is part of the City’s Development Services function and is grounded in delivering excellent customer service while protecting the quality and integrity of City infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Driver's License
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited College or University
  • Or an equivalency of an Associate's Degree in Engineering or related field, and 6+ years of engineering principles and practices, including design standards, or directly related experience
• 1+ years of experience/knowledge of engineering principles and practices, including design standards for water, sewer, and/or stormwater‑related fields
• Engineering Intern Certification by NC Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors (or the ability to obtain within 24 months of hire date)

An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications)

• Bachelor of Engineering;
  Bachelor of Science or related field
• Experience interpreting engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports.
• Experience with ESRI GIS
