Police Officer – UNC Greensboro, Piedmont Triad region, North Carolina

Primary

Purpose:

Protect and serve students, faculty, staff and visitors through law enforcement and crime prevention. Patrol campus, investigate complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances using a community‑oriented policing philosophy.

Position Summary

Positions in this banded class perform law‑enforcement work at a university campus or other state facility. With full powers of arrest, officers enforce state and federal laws. Duties include patrolling assigned areas, responding to complaints, apprehending violators, investigating incidents, collecting and preserving evidence, testifying in court, and performing related work. Officers may serve as patrol officers, detectives, crime‑prevention officers or shift lead officers.

Police Officer Trainee
:
Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for Police Officer I, or who are currently in basic law‑enforcement training (BLET), may be considered. Trainees must complete BLET and attain NC law‑enforcement certification. Salary range: $39,462 – $47,297.

Police Officer I:
Entry‑level (0‑2 years). Requires probationary certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer. Salary range: $51,660 – $55,338.

Police Officer II
:
Fully functioning officers with 2+ years of experience. Requires completion of BLET and general certification from NC CJETSC. Salary range: $54,243 – $58,105.

Police Officer III
:
Veteran officers with 4+ years of experience. Requires completion of BLET and intermediate certification from NC CJETSC. Salary range: $56,995 – $61,010.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
  • At least probationary certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed campus police officers.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates

MUST HAVE VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidate must be at least 20 years of age and meet physical and psychological requirements of the NC Criminal Education and Standards Commission, including physical, medical, psychological exams and drug test.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and pass an in‑depth background investigation (driver’s history, criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, drug screening, and physical).
  • Must successfully complete the university’s orientation course and a twelve‑week department field training program during the probationary period; must satisfactorily complete the state‑mandated probationary period.
  • Must effectively communicate orally and in writing and interact professionally with the public and representatives of the criminal‑justice system.
  • Selected candidate will be considered an “ESSENTIAL” Emergency Duty Employee; may be called to work outside the normal schedule during emergencies.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Ability to subdue resisting suspects and effect forcible arrest.
  • Ability to defend oneself.
  • Ability to operate a law‑enforcement vehicle.
  • Ability to pursue fleeing suspects.
  • Ability to perform searches of people and buildings.
  • Exercise independent judgement.
  • Apply appropriate use‑of‑force options.
  • Comprehend legal documents (citations, affidavits, warrants).
  • Command emergency personnel at accidents, emergencies and disasters.
  • Willingness to work day and night shift assignments.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

Position is designated as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act, requires reporting Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Coordinator and completing annual training.
