Primary PurposeThe main purpose of the UNC Greensboro Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina Greensboro through law enforcement and crime prevention. Our officers and employees are highly trained and dedicated individuals whose personal mission is to make sure campus community’s experience at UNCG is not only memorable and successful, but also safe.
We are counting on everyone to not only take responsible for their own safety but the safety of others. The police department offers these and other programs to help our Spartans achieve a safe and secure community.
Positions in this banded class perform law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, positions enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations.
Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints to assess and handle cases, collecting and preservation of evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work. Positions may serve as a patrol officer, detective squad member, crime prevention officer, or in some police organizations as a lead officer on an assigned shift.
Positions at this level have an advanced level of training and experience compared to the Police Officer positions.
Master Police Officer I:
Candidates will have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED and six years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. An advanced degree (JD, Masters, Doctorate) reduces the minimum experience required by one year. The recruitment salary for this level is $60,016 – $65,274.

- At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.

Preferred Qualifications- Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at the time of appointment; candidate must meet physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission, which includes a physical exam, medical exam, psychological exam, and drug test.
- In addition, the UNC Greensboro Police Department requires candidates to possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License; and pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes driver’s history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, drug screening, and physical.
- Must successfully complete the university’s orientation course and a twelve-week department field training program during the probationary period; must satisfactorily complete the state-mandated probationary period.
- The selected candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner.
- The candidate(s) for this position will be considered an ‘ESSENTIAL’ Emergency Duty Employee.
- This means that the position is one that is necessary to ensure University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather and/or other emergency situations, including those that require the University to close.
