Job Description for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who practices both autonomously and collaboratively with a team of health providers to deliver high-quality, evidence-based anesthesia and pain management services. The CRNA cares for patients across all age groups and acuity levels in various settings, supporting procedures such as surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management interventions.

Clinical Responsibilities:

Assist with collecting, reviewing, and evaluating patient data relevant to medical and surgical histories, considering the planned procedure.

Maintain a safe environment and respond appropriately to emergencies and safety hazards.

Prepare and administer medications and fluids following accepted safety standards.

Continuously assess airway, anesthesia depth, fluid status, and physiological responses to ensure patient safety.

Complete required documentation, including surgical safety checklists, pre-operative assessments, intra-operative anesthetic records, and transfer-of-care notes.

Log incidents in the computerized Safety Portal.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

Required:

Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program recognized by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.

Experience:

Licensure, Certification, and Registry:

North Carolina Registered Nurse (RN) licensure
Recognition as an Advanced Practice RN by the NC Board of Nursing
Certification/Recertification as a Nurse Anesthetist by the National Board of Certification & Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NCBRNA)
BLS (CPR) certification from American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider
ACLS Certification
PALs or NPR as recommended per campus
