Position: Registered Nurse, Days

Overview

Responsibilities
  • Provides planning and delivery of direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process of Assessment, Planning, Intervention, and Evaluation.
  • Develops nursing care plans in coordination with patient, family and interdisciplinary staff as necessary.
  • Communicates changes in patient’s clinical condition with Physicians, Nursing Supervisor/Manager, and co-workers as appropriate.
  • Participates in discharge planning process.
  • Maintains the standard of nursing care and implements policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing department.
  • Directs, supervises, provides and evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
  • Assigns or delegates tasks based on patient needs, potential for harm, complexity, and within scope of practice of staff.
  • Assigns nursing care team members in accordance with patient needs, team members’ capabilities and qualifications.
  • Documents patient admission assessments, reassessments, care plans, and other pertinent information in the patient’s medical record according to nursing standards and policies.
  • Performs assessments on all patients on admission and reassessments as per policy; makes referrals to other disciplines as needed.
  • Develops and updates the plan of care on admission and coordinates with patient, family, and team.
  • Assesses and reassesses pain; educates patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Revises the plan of care as indicated by patient response and evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities appropriate to the patient’s age and condition.
  • Receives physician orders, ensures transcription accuracy, and documents completion.
  • Administers medication utilizing the five rights of medication administration to reduce errors.
  • Forms a teaching plan based on identified learning needs; involves family as appropriate.
  • Assists physicians with examinations, treatments and procedures within scope of practice.
  • Performs treatments and services to the level of licensure.
  • Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs; acts as liaison among administration, patients, physicians, and other providers.
  • Interacts professionally with patients and families and involves them in the care plan.
  • Interprets data about the patient’s status to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
  • Ensures patient safety and reduces medical errors; initiates or assists with emergency measures as needed.
  • Answers call lights, pages, and rounds on assigned patients; anticipates needs and responds appropriately.
  • Collaborates with other departments to provide interdisciplinary care.
  • Provides end-of-shift report to the oncoming nurse; ensures narcotics are counted and orders are signed off.
  • Communicates clearly with management, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Addresses psychosocial needs and coordinates with Social Services/Discharge Planner for in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
  • Participates in orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Qualifications Education
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or an Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program.
Licenses/Certification
  • Current state licensure as Registered Nurse.
  • BCLS certification from AHA required.
  • ACLS certification from AHA required.
Experience
  • Minimum six months’ Medical/Surgical experience in an acute care setting preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Able to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities, and function under stress.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  • Must read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Must have regular attendance.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
