Temporary Extension Technician – Goldsboro, NC
OverviewThe Extension Technician – Horticulture provides technical, hands‑on support for demonstration and educational programs involving the North Carolina A&T State University Cooperative Extension, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems Small Farm Unit, in Goldsboro, NC. This role is responsible to the specialty fruit and vegetable production, demonstration, and training under the leadership of CEFS Director at NC A&T and the Small Farm Unit manager.
Duties include crop establishment and maintenance; harvesting/post‑harvest handling of crops; greenhouse and high tunnel management; recordkeeping, data collection and entry; and communication with clientele, members of producer groups and non‑government organizations, co‑workers, and other organization staff.
- Demonstrate in‑depth knowledge of horticulture specialization, program, process, and organizational operation.
- Provide technical, hands‑on support for demonstration and educational programs in horticulture and natural resources.
- Establish and maintain crops, including planting, fertilizing, pest control, and other horticultural tasks.
- Harvest crops and handle post‑harvesting duties, including plot clean‑up.
- Manage greenhouse and high tunnels.
- Use and maintain job‑related tools, equipment, and facilities.
- Maintain record‑keeping, including data collection and entry.
- Interact positively with clientele, members of producer groups and non‑government organizations, co‑workers, and other organization staff.
- College education or equivalent training and experience.
- Preferred:
Some experience on commercial farms and at least one year of related plant production experience. - Preferred:
Two years of hands‑on horticulture experience focused on vegetable production and at least one year of experience with high tunnel, greenhouse, and/or organic production systems. - Knowledge of agroforestry and food safety.
- Experience collecting and inputting crop yield data.
- Experience preparing field days, tours, and other on‑farm educational events.
- Understanding of organic production.
- Ability to use and maintain basic horticulture farm equipment (tractors, implements, hand tools) and basic computer software for recordkeeping.
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and work in inclement weather.
- North Carolina Driver’s License.
- North Carolina Pesticide License or ability to obtain once hired.
8 am – 5 pm
Compensation$20 per hour (non‑exempt, temporary full‑time)
Remote/Hybrid WorkThis position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. N.C. A&T employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina within a 2‑hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
