Primary Purpose Of The Organizational Unit
The Department of Recreation and Wellness (Rec Well) is housed within the Division of Student Affairs. Rec Well fosters comprehensive wellness by engaging the student and campus community in experiential and educational opportunities, including fitness, aquatics, informal recreation, outdoor adventures, competitive sports, esports, and wellness education. The department strives to enhance student success through inclusive programs and resources.
Position Summary
The Assistant Director, Fitness oversees the strategic planning, development, coordination, and administration of fitness and wellness programs for students, faculty, staff, and the UNC Greensboro community. The role ensures high‑quality program delivery, enhances student well‑being, fosters engagement, and supports the university mission. The Director serves on the department Management Team, assisting with strategic planning and goal setting.
Minimum Qualifications
- Relevant Master’s degree OR a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of professional experience in fitness or wellness program management.
- Nationally recognized fitness certification.
- Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certification (or ability to obtain within first 60 days of hire).
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends in addition to regular university hours.
Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, And Certificates
Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certification (or ability to obtain within first 60 days). Current nationally recognized fitness certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant Master’s degree.
- Experience supervising full‑time, part‑time staff or graduate assistants.
- Experience with program management and scheduling software such as Innosoft Fusion, EMS, Whento Work, and Connect
2. - Marketing, promotion, and communications experience.
- Knowledge of budget management and financial planning.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to develop and lead fitness and wellness programs for diverse populations.
- Oversee fitness and wellness programs for the Department of Recreation and Wellness.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of fitness and wellness professionals, including full‑time and part‑time staff, personal trainers, and student employees (including graduate assistants).
- Direct daily operations of fitness programs and assist with the development and implementation of signature fitness and wellness events.
- Conduct group training, recreational classes, and/or group fitness sessions.
- Provide ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance staff skills and competencies. Coordinate in‑service training and lead program‑area specific meetings.
- Develop, execute, and maintain short‑ and long‑term financial strategies, including revenue forecasting and budgeting for the fitness program.
