Join the Texas Department of Transportation as a General Engineering Tech I or II in Greenville, TX. This role involves advanced transportation engineering operations and maintenance support, including construction inspection, traffic control, and public assistance during emergencies.
Key Responsibilities- Administers construction and bridge inspection record‑keeping activities.
- Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements, extra work orders, and revised quantity estimates.
- Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
- Inspects barricades, construction and non‑routine maintenance methods, workmanship, traffic control devices, and related highway structures for compliance with specifications and regulations.
- Maintains files of shop drawings and monitors progress of construction activities.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Assists Area Engineer in planning and coordinating Area Office operations.
- Consults with contractors’ superintendents on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilization data and cost estimates.
- Researches plan sets, specifications, and estimate documents for accuracy and compliance.
- Reviews/assists in developing traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement, monitors lane closures, documents traffic control changes, and works with the Public Information Officer.
Education
:
High School Graduate or equivalent.
Experience
:
- General Engineering Tech I – 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work.
- General Engineering Tech II – 6 years in similar experience.
Licenses and Certifications
:
- Valid driver’s license; driving a state vehicle required.
Preferred Qualifications
:
- Commercial Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of applicable inspection methods, Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, industry safety standards, and calculation skills.
- Ability to prepare, review, process, and ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and estimates.
- Confidential record‑keeping and safe working relationships.
- Maintenance concepts, construction record auditing, and project coordination for Tech II.
- Work indoors and outdoors under various environmental conditions.
- Potential hazards: moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, chemicals.
- Requires lifting up to 50 lbs, walking long distances, balancing, and operating motor vehicles.
- Pre‑employment physical; drug test required.
- Must be able to report within 45 minutes on a 24‑hour basis for emergencies.
Paris District – Hunt County Maintenance Section, Greenville, TX. This position may be filled at Tech I or Tech II level depending on qualifications and business need.
