The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success, and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs.

The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry, and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the rural populations of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina.

These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service‑Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

• Lead the clinical programs related to the discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the School of Dental Medicine.
• Educate predoctoral dental students and advanced education residents (AEGD, GPR, and Pediatric Dentistry programs) in the discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
• Support the development, implementation, and delivery of innovative curricula and instruction to dental students and residents at the School of Dental Medicine.
• Active participation in the delivery of patient care and the generation of new knowledge via research and scholarly activities.
• Provide instruction in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, general pathology, and pathophysiology to predoctoral dental students in didactic and clinical settings within a General Dentistry teaching model.
• Assess student achievement of competencies (knowledge, values, and skills) expected of the independent general dentist (graduate), including the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal and osseous disorders.
• Provide instruction in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology to advanced education residents in interdisciplinary, didactic seminars and in the clinic.
• Provide patient care services, including the evaluation and management of patients with clinical manifestations of oral and systemic diseases, in Ross Hall clinics, Faculty Practice, Hospital Dentistry, the Community Service Learning Centers, and ECU Health, including the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center.
• Participation in regular meetings of the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center’s Head and Neck Cancer group.
• Participation in SoDM outreach and service activities, specifically related to awareness, education, prevention, and management of oral diseases.
• Oversee, market, and manage the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology biopsy and teledentistry diagnostic services as components of the School’s Faculty Practice and in full compliance with applicable governmental regulations (e.g., Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments or CLIA).
• Work closely with the Department Chair, Course Directors, and the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics to develop, implement, and deliver novel curricula to include active learning strategies and information technologies.
• Assist the Department Chair and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in continuous quality improvement and compliance efforts.
• Conduct basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify the candidate for appropriate promotion.
