Organizational Unit Overview

ECU Health Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine focuses on education, patient care, scholarship, and service in mental health. The department is part of ECU Health, a 1,708‑bed academic health system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 counties of eastern North Carolina. The department is involved in the development of a new 144‑bed behavioral health facility with 24 inpatient beds dedicated to children and adolescents, opening spring 2025.

Job Duties

This full‑time faculty position serves as the Associate Medical Director for the Inpatient Psychiatry Service. The associate director will lead the Med‑Psych program within a 52‑bed inpatient service at ECU Health Medical Center, providing clinical care, teaching, and scholarly activity while ensuring program quality and compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct care to patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Serve as the Associate Medical Director for the inpatient program (Behavioral Health Unit), collaborating with the Service Chief, Unit Administrator, Medical Director, and hospital leadership to develop policies, procedures, and quality standards for the Med‑Psych program.
  • Lead program oversight, including regular meetings, committee participation, and review of professional practice standards.
  • Develop and implement in‑service and continuing education for hospital and medical staff.
  • Assist in teaching and clinical supervision of medical students, residents, and other health‑professional trainees.
  • Collaborate with faculty on clinical research and initiate projects when appropriate.
  • Perform duties appropriate to academic rank as a University faculty member.
  • Ensure program compliance with Quality Assurance and Utilization Review policies, National Agency standards (e.g., Joint Commission), and medical staff bylaws.
Qualifications
  • MD or DO from an accredited institution; ECFMG certification accepted for foreign graduates.
  • Graduated from a medical school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the AAMC and the Council of Medical Education of the AMA.
  • Completed an approved combined medicine‑psychiatry or family medicine‑psychiatry residency program, or satisfactory dual training in internal or family medicine and psychiatry.
  • Board certified or qualified in both psychiatry and internal or family medicine.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of North Carolina.
  • Clinical experience in inpatient settings with patients having significant general medical and psychiatric comorbidities.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
  • Board Certification or eligibility for board certification in both psychiatry and internal or family medicine.
  • Eligibility to obtain a medical license in North Carolina.
Preferred Experience , Skills, Training/Education
  • Collaboration experience with multidisciplinary mental health teams.
  • Clinical experience with developmental disabilities.
  • Experience conducting clinical research.
  • Experience in medical education.
  • Experience in psychiatric administration and management.
