We are looking for an employee with strong phlebotomy skills and an understanding of preanalytical procedures. Candidates with knowledge of laboratory testing and procedures are preferred. This employee will be responsible for ordering lab tests and performing specimen collection at the assigned Physicians East location. Candidates with strong teamwork and interpersonal skills will excel in this position.

Typical Physical DemandsRequires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Frequent walking, sitting, bending, and standing are required for extended periods of time. Lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
Typical Working ConditionsExposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
ResponsibilitiesEnter patient information into the laboratory information system (LIS), enter tests ordered by the physician into the LIS accurately and efficiently. When entering patient information and ordering tests, the phlebotomist is required to verify patient demographic information and insurance information match EMR chart and/or encounter form. The phlebotomist is also required to review the test order in EMR Link for special instructions or notes from providers.
The phlebotomist is required to review test orders for completeness and accuracy. Phlebotomy staff must ensure the order in EMR Link and Orchard Harvest are the same.
Perform venipuncture using correct order of draw. Phlebotomist must not attempt venipuncture more than twice. If the phlebotomist has attempted venipuncture twice and failed, they should ask the patient if they would like another phlebotomist to attempt collection. Phlebotomists must also collect swabs to test for: MRSA, Flu, Strep, and Throat Culture. Initial all samples collected.
Distribute 24‑hour urine collection kits and stool collection kits with proper instructions and answer questions concerning this collection from patients.
Follow workflow as follows:
Patient presents to lab with encounter ticket.
Phlebotomist locates diagnostic order in EMR Link. The patient’s pending orders are reviewed. Duplicate orders are removed. Current orders are reviewed for special instructions or text from providers. Orders are also reviewed for accuracy and possible late test additions. These additions will have a caution box beside them. This means the test was added after the original order was signed. This test will NOT cross over into the LIS and must be added manually to the order in Orchard.
The Send to Lab option is chosen approving the order to be sent to the LIS.
Phlebotomist toggles over to Orchard LIS and locates the patient’s order in the Release Stored Orders Tab. Click on patient name column heading to batch all the patient’s orders together. The order is reviewed and sent to the order entry screen by double clicking on the patient’s name. Once the order entry screen is populated, the order is reviewed for accuracy and Save Order is selected.
Review Release Stored Orders to ensure all tests have been ordered.
Barcodes will print for each test ordered. Phlebotomist will then call patient back to drawing station by the encounter ticket.
Phlebotomist should verify patient by having patient state their name and date of birth.
Venipuncture is performed and patient will collect urine or another specimen if necessary. Phlebotomist should verify patient a second time by having patient state their name and date of birth.
Phlebotomist signs all blood collection tubes with their initials and sends specimens to laboratory through pneumatic tube system.
Send or transport collected specimens to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection. If transport is delayed, phlebotomist must ensure specimen has been properly stored until transport is available.
