The Department of Radiation Oncology was established in 1985 and is part of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The Department proudly hosts a two‑year, CAMPEP‑accredited medical physics residency program, and co‑sponsors a CAMPEP‑accredited medical physics graduate program with the Department of Physics. Department faculty provide professional services as radiation oncologists and medical physicists, and are actively engaged in oncology patient care, clinical research, and teaching of students, residents, and fellows.
Faculty also serve in various leadership capacities at ECU Health Medical Center, including Chief of Service of Radiation Oncology and Director of Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy. Among the clinics where department faculty provide care is ECU Health Radiation Oncology, located in the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Cancer Tower at ECU Health Medical Center. Within this 6‑story, 96‑bed, 418,000 square foot Tower are several state‑of‑the‑art treatment technologies, including: three Varian True Beam linear accelerators with optical surface imaging;
respiratory gating and a 6
DoF couch; an M6 Cyber Knife; an HDR brachytherapy suite; a GE CT simulator;
Gamma Tile therapy; Y‑90 liver directed therapy; and radiopharmaceuticals. The Tower also houses multispecialty clinics, a 60‑chair infusion center, patient support services, a women’s imaging center, pharmacy, conference space, and healing gardens. In addition, department faculty provide services at the ECU Health Gamma Knife® Center located at ECU Health Medical Center, which houses a Gamma Knife Icon unit with dedicated MRI and patient support space.
The Department also collaborates with ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital, and ECU Health Roanoke‑Chowan Hospital to provide clinical care and quality standardization for patients across eastern North Carolina.

The Department of Radiation Oncology is recruiting one Resident at the rank of Clinical Instructor, to join its existing medical physics residency as a full‑time, (12‑month) fixed‑term faculty member. The Residency Program consists of two years of rotations, giving the Resident experience with a complete range of therapeutic medical physics clinical procedures.
The Resident will join a clinical team including Medical Physicists certified by the American Board of Radiology;
Dosimetrists; and Radiation Oncologists. Faculty physicists also support the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physicists Education Program (CAMPEP) accredited graduate degree program in Medical Physics, offered through the Department of Physics at East Carolina University. The successful candidate will join a clinical program in a university setting with a full range of radiation therapy offerings, including External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), High Dose‑rate Radiotherapy (HDR), and radiopharmaceuticals.
The Medical Physics team provides clinical support for a Gamma Knife Icon Stereotactic Radiosurgery facility, an M6 Cyber Knife, and three True Beam linac machines. Clinical support is provided at ECU Health Radiation Oncology of ECU Health Cancer Care, and at the ECU Health Gamma Knife Center.
