Senior Research Analyst for the Institutional Review Board

Part‑time (0.60 FTE) Temporary Staff Salary Range: $22,500
The Senior Research Analyst supports the administration of the human research review and approval process, providing guidance to investigators and stakeholders, and ensures compliance with institutional SOPs and federal, state, local regulations. The role includes post‑IRB monitoring, human research protections program support, and occasional other duties.
Job DutiesPost‑IRB Approval Monitoring – 50%
- Assist in developing annual monitoring plans and scheduling targeted studies.
- Coordinate and perform routine post‑IRB monitoring, ensuring regulations are applied and studies are conducted per approval.
- Review informed consent documents and processes, observe consent processes with participants.
- Audit UMCIRB files for compliance with regulations.
- Develop and deliver training materials on institutional policies and federal regulations.
- Conduct education sessions for IRB customers.
- Provide guidance to investigators on request interpretations.
- Support study start‑up for new investigators.
- Aid preparation for external audits (FDA, sponsor audits).
- Primary contact for investigators during proposal development.
- Manage, train, and support UMCIRB members.
- Collaborate with the Director and staff to support IRB committees.
- Develop education on federal guidance or local policies.
- Screen and evaluate research studies for adherence to IRB requirements.
- Provide feedback and mediation to resolve issues.
- Use critical thinking to solve complex problems.
- Translate UMCIRB determinations into the electronic IRB system.
- Identify and implement process improvements.
- Consistently adhere to UMCIRB policies for participant protection.
- Educate staff and investigators on human subject research guidelines.
- Communicate with local institutional and regulatory officials.
- Assist in drafting and reviewing policy changes.
- Consult federally regulated agencies when needed.
- Draft and maintain Investigator Agreements.
- Execute IRB Authorization Agreements with external IRBs.
- Other duties as assigned.
The position is a temporary 6‑month term (may be revised) and may qualify for Flexible Work Arrangements under ECU FWA Policy, contingent on funding.
Minimum Education and Experience- Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree plus three years of related experience.
- Experience with electronic data management systems.
- Experience interpreting regulatory documents.
- Experience developing SOPs and training workshops.
- Experience with post‑IRB approval monitoring.
- Experience in a university or research setting.
- Certification as an IRB Professional, CCRP, CRA, or eligibility to apply.

- Strong verbal, written and customer–service skills.
- Ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
