Job Duties

The Registered Nurse at the East Carolina University Student Health Service is charged with the provision of patient care to the students of ECU. Responsibilities include working collaboratively with other nurses, medical providers, lab and other support staff to provide quality care in a positive, professional and safe environment. The Registered Nurse will strive to meet the patient's needs including emotional care, relief from discomfort, administration of hydration and medicinal therapy, and patient education.

The RN is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care through the nursing process under the supervision of the Nurse Manager.

  • Perform professional duties through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, including education and counseling of patients in accordance with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act, ANA College Health Nursing Practice Standards, SHS guidelines of Nursing Care, SHS Policies and Procedures, provider's orders, and instructions from the nurse manager or director of clinical operations.
  • Identify and document patient needs; prepare students for exam or procedure; anticipate provider's needs and ensure supplies are available; assist provider with exam/treatment; administer medication as ordered; orient patients to services at SHS; provide follow‑up instructions and counseling; document patient care through interviews, discharge, and SHS forms; recognize changes in patient status and communicate verbally and in writing to provider; identify learning needs;

    assist in setting goals; implement and evaluate care and teaching; accurately assess, plan, and intervene in the care of patients in the Urgent Care area based on Student Health Service Nurse Assessment Protocol.
  • Perform triage of patients according to acuity; provide health care based on the Nursing Assessment Protocol; educate patients on self‑care clinic use; review health‑care instruction sheets; obtain specimens when necessary; instruct students on effectiveness of treatment received.
  • Function as rapid‑care nurse when required; administer allergy vaccines, immunizations, and vaccines with consent; recognize vaccine reactions requiring immediate and/or emergency intervention; repeat BP and specimen collection as per provider specifications; monitor employee immunization needs; organize outreach programs; administer injectable contraceptives and other prescribed cyclic medications.
  • Rotate as telephone triage nurse: triage patient calls using approved protocols; advise health‑care access at SHS; refer patients to appointments or on‑site evaluation; provide education on preventive and palliative measures; refer emergency calls to 911; document calls; assist appointment secretaries; manage calls from outside offices and pharmacies; assist tracking nurse as needed.
  • Maintain supplies and annual inventory records; check emergency equipment, narcotics, and other inventory as assigned; provide feedback to the nurse manager on day‑to‑day activities.
