Nursing Assistant (NA) – Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Position Summary
The Nursing Assistant performs specific responsibilities under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. Functions within the framework of the NAI listing granted by the NC Department of Health and Human Services and practices within the philosophy and goals of patient care services. In addition, the Nursing Assistant may be utilized in the Observer Role, responsible for monitoring one or more assigned patients on a designated unit for a specified time period.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist licensed nurses with patient care tasks as directed.
- Monitor patient conditions and report changes to nursing staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of patient care areas.
- Support family members and patients in a compassionate manner.
- Follow institutional policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- High School or GED (preferred) or higher.
- NAI listing with the NC Department of Health and Human Services is required.
- Current American Heart Association Heart Saver or higher certification is required.
- Completed De‑escalation training (Non‑violent crisis intervention or equivalent program); if not current at hire must complete within 90 days and maintain without lapse during employment.
- Training not required for Ambulatory clinical positions.

Department & Primary Population
Primary population:
All pediatric patients outside of the immediate newborn period meeting criteria for intensive or intermediate level of care with common diagnoses of respiratory failure, cardiovascular disease, neurologic disorders, metabolic disturbances, hematologic or oncologic disease with complications, sepsis, poisonings, trauma, ECMO or CRRT.
Work Schedule
Rotating Day/Night Shift. Full‑time: 3‑12 hour shifts per week.
