Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
Under limited supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the routine maintenance and repair of vehicles owned by the Solid Waste Department, the County’s General Fund, and/or Emergency Management and Emergency Medical fleet. Employee is responsible for routine servicing of both diesel and gasoline engines. If applicable, employee is responsible for moving and allocating fleet resources to ensure adequate availability across the General Fund and EMS system of required vehicles.
Must be available to advise and diagnosis County departments on maintenance/repair issue with General Fund fleet. Reports to the Sanitation Mechanic Supervisor or the Fleet Manager.
Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Diagnosis and recommend to outside vendors service work that needs to be done to the County fleet. Answer and return phone calls to various garages and service stations located throughout the County, including site visits, all repair work must be approved by this position and the supervisor.
Answer and return calls to County employees, contact agency staff, or others associated with fleet operations.
Diagnosis and repair flat tires, dead batteries, keys locked in vehicles, check engine lights, etc.
As applicable, adjusts and makes repairs to diesel and gasoline engines, adjusts or repairs valves, carburetors, generators and related units; replaces all worn or defective parts.
Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brakes, steering mechanisms, and electrical, cooling and related systems on vehicles and equipment.
As needed, performs light welding and machine work incidental to completion of repair assignments.
As needed, paints vehicles/equipment with spray gun as needed.
Performs housekeeping duties to ensure clean and organized shop.
As needed, performs documentation and data entry to ensure all County, EM and EMS fleet vehicles are accounted for at all times and all vehicle related information is up to date.
Provide data reports of fleet related items when requested.
Additional Job FunctionsPerforms other related work as assigned. Graduation from high school supplemented by formal training in mechanical or related trades, and 4 years of experience as a mechanic including experience in the maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered engines; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
