Senior Operations Specialist (Water)
Join HDR as Senior Operations Specialist focusing on water treatment and wastewater management. HDR is employee‑owners fully engaged in creating a welcoming environment where each of us is valued and respected.

As part of the Water Business Group, you’ll help shape community water management, deliver safe drinking water and treat wastewater responsibly, develop sustainable supplies and protect lives and property through flood control.
Primary Responsibilities- Support HDR project leaders at local, state, and regional levels on water treatment projects requiring Operations Specialists input.
- Review drawings for operability review and Haz Ops analysis with focus on operating a variety of treatment processes.
- Manage operations and maintenance projects with municipal and industrial clients involving client interfacing, regulatory reporting, and personnel, subcontractor, and maintenance management.
- Develop startup and commissioning plans and host workshops with client contractors and operators to ensure plans work for each plant.
- Perform startup and commissioning of new water treatment facilities, working alongside contractors and engineers to ensure new equipment functions correctly before handing over to O&M staff.
- Perform formal and informal training to help clients’ treatment plants operate as well as they can operate.
- Participate in testing facilities to ensure they are ready for startup and after startup they meet capacity requirements of design.
- Perform condition assessment and asset management tasks on water and wastewater facilities, using state‑of‑the‑art evaluation tools.
- Perform operational or maintenance troubleshooting and evaluations on municipal and industrial water facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years field experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment at water treatment facilities or resolving water treatment process problems. Additional construction experience is a plus.
- High‑level water treatment operator license or professional engineering license.
- Ability to interpret engineering plans and specifications.
- Microsoft Office product and computerized maintenance and management systems experience required.
- Attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture is a must.
- Valid driver’s license.
- High School diploma or equivalent.

Primary location:
Vienna, Virginia. Other locations listed include West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, Georgia, New York, Florida, Alabama, Pennsylvania, etc. Salary range $71, depending on skills, experience, education and geographic location.
