Overview
Process Engineer, Coating at Sabert Corporation. The Coating Process Engineer is an intermediate technical operations role for individuals with moderate to highly proficient skills in process understanding, troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and equipment operations. This role requires hands-on involvement with operating equipment, conducting machine maintenance, identifying and eliminating recurring issues, and training new hires. The Coating PE I is expected to work independently and within cross-functional teams, using an in-depth understanding of the coating and manufacturing process to drive improvements, ensure quality, and foster a culture of safety.
Responsibilities- Comply with GMP standards.
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for documentation, presentation, and data analysis.
- Develop and write SOPs or Work Instructions as needed.
- Present process improvements and findings to plant leadership teams and peers.
- Document and track process changes, emphasizing Centerlines to ensure process stability.
- Demonstrate strong independent troubleshooting skills.
- Manage independent projects as assigned.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills, attention to detail, multitasking capability, and a positive attitude toward teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Properties of coating materials and their application methods.
- Coating steps: application, drying, cooling, stacking, counting.
- Coating machine process steps: denesting, EOAT/pick and place transfer, coating booth, oven/drying, and stacking/counting.
- Coat weight testing.
- General process control and fundamental operation of valves, instruments, and process equipment.
- Coating chemistry and component properties, including solids content, viscosity, and pH levels.
- Troubleshooting capabilities for coating-related equipment, raw materials, and processes.
- Understanding of pulp coating processes and their relationship to final product formation.
- Ability to recognize and troubleshoot coating-related quality defects in finished products.
- Knowledge of quality criteria for finished goods.
- Work effectively with other Process Engineers, peers, and Subject Matter Experts to gain deeper process and equipment knowledge.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers for new equipment installations, startups, troubleshooting, and optimization.
- Run and manage process trials independently or alongside Process Engineering/CFI, including rationale development, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Apply Lean Six Sigma concepts such as DMAIC for process improvement initiatives.
- Partner with the Maintenance group to support preventive maintenance (PM) programs.
- Identify opportunities for spare parts management.
- Develop best practices and SOPs for equipment care, reliability, and longevity.
- Develop and maintain SOPs or Work Instructions as needed.

- High School diploma/GED with Trade School, Technical Secondary School, or higher education in engineering, mechatronics, automation, or mechanics preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience in the manufacturing industry, preferably pulp, paper, or coating-related fields.
- 3–5 years of experience in process troubleshooting.
- Strong technical background with proven success in resolving process-related issues.
