Paralegal – Family Law
Reports to:
Supervising Solicitor / Head of Family Department
Job Purpose of the Paralegal
To provide support to solicitors in the Family Law team by preparing cases, managing
documents, assisting clients, and ensuring smooth progression of family matters.
Key Responsibilities of the Paralegal
Casework & Administration
• Open, manage, and maintain family law case files.
• Maintain accurate records, diaries, and deadlines.
• Draft correspondence to clients, courts, and third parties.
Document Preparation
• Draft and proofread legal documents such as applications, witness statements, and bundles.
• File court documents and ensure compliance with court deadlines and procedures.
Research & Evidence
• Conduct legal research on family law matters, including case law and procedural
rules.
• Review and organise evidence, disclosure, and supporting documents.
Client Contact
• Take initial instructions from clients in a sensitive and professional manner.
• Keep clients updated on case progress.
• Liaise with experts, counsel, and third parties involved in proceedings.
Court & Hearing Support
• Assist solicitors with preparation for hearings, including preparing bundles.
• Attend court to support solicitors and clients as required.
Legal Aid & Case Funding
• Assist with legal aid applications and ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency
requirements where applicable.
Person Specification for the Paralegal
Qualifications & Experience
• Law degree, LPC, or equivalent (desirable).
• Previous paralegal experience in family law (advantageous).
• Knowledge of family law procedures, including child arrangements, divorce,
financial remedies, and domestic abuse cases (advantageous).
Skills needed for the Paralegal
• Strong organisational and time management skills.
• Excellent drafting and written communication.
• Ability to work with sensitivity and discretion in highly emotional situations.
• Competent in Microsoft Office and case management systems.
Qualities needed for the Paralegal
• Empathetic, professional, and approachable.
• Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Team player with ability to work independently.
• Commitment to client care, confidentiality, and access to justice
