Job Purpose

Serves as the Deputy Director of Nathaniel Witherell, supporting the Executive Director in the overall administration of the facility and assuming full authority in the Executive Director’s absence. Directs the overall operation of the Nursing Division of Nathaniel Witherell, all federal, state, and local regulations.

Duties And Responsibilities Deputy Director
  • Assists and supports the Executive Director with the overall administration of the facility, including the oversight of all facility operations and divisions.
  • Participates in the development of the facility’s overall budget.
  • Acts on behalf of the Executive Director in their absence or as required.
  • Represents Nathaniel Witherell at community events and engages in marketing and public relations opportunities, as requested.
Director Of Nursing
  • Establishes, implements, reviews, and modifies nursing standards, policies, and procedures, ensuring safe, high-quality, resident-centered care in full compliance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures resident care plans appropriately address residents’ nursing care needs as well as potential risks to their well-being.
  • Conducts a root cause analysis of all incident reports, ensuring the appropriate development or modification of Plans of Corrections as needed.
  • Directs the facility’s infection prevention and control program.
  • Serves as the point-person for the facility during state and federal surveys; ensures ongoing readiness through audits, mock surveys, staff training, and corrective action planning.
  • Ensures the effective management of nursing personnel, establishing a system of ongoing staff performance reviews, identifying and addressing areas of concern, and providing the appropriate training programs.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors the Nursing Division’s budget.
  • Ensures the cost effectiveness of the use of inventory and equipment, as well as of the deployment and scheduling of staff.
  • Delivers clear and actionable reports to the Nathaniel Witherell Board, Town governing bodies, and external stakeholders.
  • Serves as a key member of the emergency preparedness team.
  • Directs the facility’s QAPI program, ensuring at least one valid, ongoing study at all times.
  • Supports Town policies and philosophies.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Proven knowledge of the principles and practices of skilled nursing facility operations, and the applicable medical principles and practices as applied to nursing home administration.
  • Proven knowledge of the Federal and State regulations for licensed nursing homes.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills in the areas of professional relationships both within and outside of the organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of geriatric nursing, clinical care management, and nursing administration in a skilled nursing facility, or comparable healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and monitor budgets while aligning clinical quality with operational and fiscal outcomes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the requirements of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Connecticut Public Health Code, Medicare, Medicaid, and other applicable regulations, ensuring compliance and survey readiness.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and develop objectives for the achievement of short-term and long-term goals.
  • Proven ability to effectively resolve problems.
  • Demonstrated leadership and personnel management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective, courteous, and collegial relationships with residents, families, staff, supervisors, board members, and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including the ability to develop reports and make public presentations.
Experience And Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university, plus eight (8) years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a long-term or acute care setting, including at least four (4) years of nursing management and health care administration experience.
  • A Master’s Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration is preferred.
Licensure/Certification

A current Connecticut Registered Nurse (RN) license is required;
Long Term Care certification is preferred.
