The Certified Nurse Midwife provides exceptional direct diagnostic and therapeutic care to women throughout the life cycle in the nurse midwifery model of care in both the office setting and labor and birth. The CNM works in collaboration with the attending physician as part of a multidisciplinary team. Cultivates a patient centric environment which focuses on the whole individual inclusive of physical, psychosocial, spiritual and functional needs of the patient, family and significant others.
Serves as the focal professional for the continuity of care in patient care within scope of practice standards, as well as specialty specific standards to address and resolve problems that may arise.

Responsibilities- Clinical Care
- The CNM provides full scope midwifery care as outlined in the Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery practice developed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Patient Education & Psychosocial Support
- The CNM will educate patient/families on care and resources. In collaboration with the collaborating MD, this may include admitting, instructions, treatment plan, potential side effects of treatment/medications and discharge plans.
- Information Management
- The CNM ensures appropriate documentation per hospital and regulatory requirements and protects information of all forms from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure.
- Quality Management
- The CNM demonstrates high professional and ethical standards, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
- Staff Education
- The CNM serves as a clinical resource for new resident staff and may provide service-specific orientation.
- Professional Development
- Maintain certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board.
Education:
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Midwifery program (Certificate, Master’s or Doctoral).
Experience:
One to two years of experience as a CNM or equivalent. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs and CNMs may be appointed to the affiliated medical staff and credentialed through the Medical Staff process.
Licensure:
Certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board;
Connecticut State Licensed Nurse Midwife;
Connecticut State RN License; BLS/NRP certified; DEA license;
Electronic Fetal Monitoring course every 2 years;
Connecticut Controlled Substance License.
Special Skills:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; knowledge of research methods; computer skills.
Physical Demand:
Possesses physical and mental health to care for patients; full range of motion including lifting and handling of patients.
