This position is responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely accounting close for both the property management company and the properties it oversees. The role involves performing a wide range of general ledger activities in a multi-entity environment, including journal entries, reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and variance analysis. The ideal candidate will possess strong accounting fundamentals, attention to detail, and analytical skills to support financial accuracy and operational efficiency.

Collaboration across departments, adherence to internal controls, and support for audits, tax filings, and system implementations are key components of this role.

Overview

Denver based National Storage Affiliates (NYSE: NSA) is a leading self‑storage REIT with over 1,000 properties spread across 42 states including Puerto Rico as of September 30, 2023. NSA is one of the largest owners and operators of self‑storage properties in the U.S. This is an in‑office, Denver‑based position.

Principal

Job Duties
  • Support the timely and accurate accounting close of the property management company and manage the close of properties managed by the company.
  • Perform general ledger accounting tasks in a complex, multi‑entity environment: develop, document, and post journal entries; handle cash transactions, prepaids, accruals, consolidation, and elimination entries.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and reconcile balance sheet accounts.
  • Research reconciling items and provide explanations to management.
  • Prepare and review financial statements for individual properties and portfolios.
  • Apply critical thinking and Excel skills to analyze large data sets and variance analysis.
  • Assist Property Accounting Manager with recurring and ad‑hoc management reports.
  • Review coding of procurement card transactions and reconcile related‑party accounts.
  • Calculate marketing costs and allocations to stores; assist affiliates in improving accounting practices.
  • Support internal and external audit requests and maintain policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Assist with system implementations and complete monthly, quarterly, and annual sales & use tax filings.
  • Navigate state, city, and municipal requirements to obtain business licenses.
  • Perform additional tasks and duties as assigned.
Physical Demands

This job operates in a professional office environment. It routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The employee frequently sits, stands, walks, and may be required to stand or walk for extended periods.

Qualifications
  • 4‑year degree in accounting.
  • 0‑3 years of accounting experience.
  • Solid general‑ledger accounting skills.
  • Working knowledge of internal controls.
  • Strong communication skills required.
  • Experience in real‑estate or multi‑unit businesses is a plus.
  • Public‑accounting or industry‑accounting experience is a plus.
  • Ability to collaborate across departmental functions.
