Unit Information
Unit:
Charge ICU Float
(Combination of MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc.)
Beds:
Varies by unit
Ratios:
1:1–1:2 based on acuity
May flex up to 1:3
1:1 for high-acuity patients (CRRT, IABP, Impella, etc.)
Charge Role:
Designated charge nurse per unit
Typically no patient assignment, unless necessary
Night shift charge may carry a small assignment
Required Experience & Skills
Must Have:
2+ years ICU experience
Prior Charge Nurse experience
Preferred:
Prior travel experience
First-time travelers must have 3+ years ICU experience and Epic experience
Drips:
Must be comfortable titrating all critical drips
Pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, etc.
Code Response:
Charge RN may respond to Codes and Rapid Responses hospital-wide
Certifications Required
BLS
ACLS
NIHSS
TNCC
Support & Equipment
Nurse Aides:
None (sitters only)
Providers:
Hospitalist or Intensivist in-house
RT Coverage: 24/7 ICU coverage
RNs expected to assist with respiratory management as needed
Equipment:
Vents, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow, breathing treatments
Telemetry:
No monitor techs
RNs read and interpret their own telemetry
Scheduling & Floating
Shifts:
7:00 AM – 7:00 PM / 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Scheduling:
Created by leadership in 6-week blocks
Travelers must be flexible to fill staffing gaps
All RTO must be submitted before assignment start
Weekends: 6–9 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
Holidays:
May be required to rotate
Call/Standby:
Rare (low census only)
Floating:
ICU, PCU/Stepdown, MS-Tele
May float to sister facilities including:
Ortho Colorado Hospital
Longmont United Hospital
St. Anthony Hospital (Lakewood)
St. Anthony North Hospital (Denver Region, CO)
Orientation
1–2 days with a preceptor
