Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic III – SE Denver (CDL required)
Job OverviewThis position is available only to Colorado state residents. The successful candidate will work primarily in the field to diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment used by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
Compensation- Base pay: $2,441–$2,622 biweekly ($63,480–$68,172 annually)
- Additional $1,000/month housing stipend (if eligible), bringing total pay to $75,480–$80,172 annually
- Work schedule:
4‑day week (06:00–16:30) May–September; 5‑day week (08:00–16:30) October–April
- Medical and dental benefits (Cigna or Kaiser) after a 30‑day sign‑up period, dependents included
- Choice of retirement plans through Colorado PERA
- 96 hours of vacation & 80 hours of sick leave earned in the first year, plus 11 paid holidays
- All tools, PPE, equipment, and training provided at no cost to the employee
- Full payment for CDL physical and reimbursement for 50% of CDL renewal after the first year
- Diagnose and repair malfunctions on heavy truck and construction equipment systems
- Perform overhauls, rebuilds, and preventative maintenance on equipment such as 3.5‑ton single‑axle, 10‑ton tandem‑axle trucks, tractor‑trailers, front‑end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15‑ft mower tractors
- Use test equipment to diagnose defects on heavy vehicles
- Order and procure parts, supplies, and fabrications as needed
- Track vehicle repairs using computer systems and maintain a clean, organized work environment
- Other duties as assigned
- Four years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair OR educational background in automotive or diesel mechanics (transcript required)
- At least one year of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment (e.g., 10‑ton double‑axle snowplows, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 15‑ft mower tractors)
- Valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no air‑brake restrictions, allowing operation in Colorado
- Must pass a pre‑employment screening (social security trace, criminal records, educational and driving records, etc.)
- Available for on‑call and shift work, including overtime, weekends, and holidays
- Physically able to perform the essential duties of the position
- Eligible for mandatory state training: new employees – two weeks in Aurora; veteran employees – one week annually
- Proven success with duties listed above
- State service experience related to these responsibilities
- Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing automotive and heavy‑diesel vehicles up to 10 tons
- ASE certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, H V A/A – preferred
- Strong interpersonal, customer service, independent work, and team collaboration skills
- Strong attention to technical detail and safety commitment
- Computer proficiency for vehicle diagnostics, data input, record‑keeping, and email communication
- Must pass background and health screenings, including a DOT physical and possible drug test
- Must respond to emergencies outside regular hours and work overtime as required
- Essential Services Designation – required to report promptly for essential or emergency services
