Job Responsibilities

Operates heavy equipment such as motor grader, truck-mounted road patcher, and backhoe in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Operates lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil levels maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages present.

Assists with instructing crew members daily in safety practices. Practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or when working with hazardous material or waste. Sets up traffic control according to SCMUTCD Standards to warn motorists of road work ahead. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as HMMS and the maintenance requests and complaints forms.

Operates tandem and single-axle dump trucks with trailers to haul materials to the job site and shop yard. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Must be available for after-hours work, inclement weather operations and on-call on a rotating basis.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
