Pay Range: $68 - $75/hour

Work Hours:

Core hours are 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Monday-Thursday and 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM Friday. Flexible schedules are available.

Job Description

The Planet Group is currently seeking a Lead Mechanical HVAC Engineer for a growing company in the heavy industrial engineering and construction industry. Qualified candidates must have a BSME or equivalent degree, PE license, 10+ years of mechanical/process engineering design experience, and demonstrated experience leading project teams and mentoring engineering staff. Candidates should also have experience supporting industrial HVAC projects within specialty chemicals, heavy industrial, and manufacturing environments, along with proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.

The Lead Mechanical HVAC Engineer will perform a variety of mechanical and process engineering work during the planning and design phases of industrial projects. This position will provide technical leadership for mechanical engineering projects, direct project workflow, mentor engineers and designers, and develop engineering solutions for mechanical utility and HVAC systems.

The Lead Engineer will coordinate multidisciplinary design efforts, interact with clients, vendors, and contractors, perform quality reviews, establish design standards, and support projects through construction.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Design mechanical and process systems ranging from simple to complex.
  • Coordinate with mechanical/process engineering teams and other design disciplines.
  • Develop design solutions for mechanical utility systems, including:
    • Chilled water
    • Cooling tower water
    • Heating water
    • Steam and condensate
    • Compressed air
    • Natural gas
    • Water systems
  • Perform and validate mechanical calculations, including HVAC load calculations and air/water pressure-drop calculations.
  • Develop and coordinate integrated designs using AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.
  • Support work delivered from multiple office locations.
  • Direct project workflow for engineers, designers, and drafters to ensure projects remain on schedule.
  • Lead project teams and provide technical direction to engineers, designers, and drafters.
  • Mentor and develop engineering and design staff while supporting their professional growth.
  • Perform quality assurance/quality control reviews of discipline calculations, drawings, and specifications prior to issuance.
  • Establish and maintain mechanical discipline design standards, templates, and best practices.
  • Interact and collaborate with clients, vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Manage changes in project scope and identify potential project risks.
  • Work with Discipline Managers and Project Managers to develop contingency plans.
  • Participate in construction-phase services, including field verification, site observations, RFI responses, and submittal reviews.
  • Travel to client sites as required.
  • Work safely at industrial facilities, including climbing elevated platforms using plant stairs and ladders when required.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license required.
  • 10+ years of mechanical/process engineering design experience.
  • Previous experience leading project teams and/or mentoring engineers and designers.
  • Experience working in the A/E industry supporting projects in:
    • Specialty chemicals
    • Heavy industrial
    • Manufacturing
  • Industrial HVAC experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience coordinating integrated designs using Navisworks or similar coordination tools.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical utility and HVAC systems.
  • Experience with mechanical calculations, including HVAC loads and air/water pressure drops.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience performing QA/QC reviews of engineering deliverables.
  • Ability to establish and maintain engineering design standards and best practices.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Ability to manage project scope changes, identify risks, and support contingency planning.
  • Ability to travel to client sites as required.
