Gresham Animal Hospital is a well-known and respected hospital in the outer SE Portland area for 80 years, in a newer 7000-square-foot facility. An externship at our hospital provides students with the opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, they share a common environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

• Work with the supervising veterinarian to gather patient histories and perform physical examinations.
• Assist in or participate in the creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, and dentistry services.
• Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures, and contribute to medical management of patients.
• Develop and practice communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

• Externships typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules.
• Open to veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education and in their final clinical year of veterinary school.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Details on stipend amounts and the stipend program are available.
