Position Overview

Provides direct and indirect care in the inpatient setting. Communicates with physicians, DON, Therapy Dept., and co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient's clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Can respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, can perform general nursing duties with adequate supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
  • Able to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes adult, geriatric, and the general patient population.
  • Able to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness.
  • Consults with therapy staff daily to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs and documents patient's status to include rehabilitation therapy progress.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills.
  • Able to adequately assist and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to the level of licensure.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to DON, coworkers, physicians and the Therapy Department staff.
  • Integrates the nursing plan of care with the Therapy Department treatment plan to attain the patient's optimal level of functioning.
  • Participates in patient care conferences.
  • Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient, including adult, geriatric and general population.
  • Obtain intravenous access as needed and administer intravenous medications according to scope of practice.
  • Perform venipuncture according to order to assist physicians with care and diagnosis.
  • Perform skin/wound assessment every shift. Provides wound care as ordered by physician or another licensed provider.
  • Demonstrates and ability to be effective, flexible, well organized and function well under stressful situations, to provide proper patient care.
