Location:
Coleg Llandrillo (North Wales) and Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm (Grimsby).
Requirements: 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at 4/C or above including Science, Maths and English.
Salary: £17,510 in the 1st year, rising incrementally each year in line with internal pay scales and national minimum wage. Benefits include pension and private single medical cover.
Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship
We are offering the opportunity to motivated people to begin a career in renewable energy. This comprehensive 3-year apprenticeship scheme will develop selected candidates into technicians working on wind turbines. The first 2 years will be classroom based at a bespoke wind turbine training facility at Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl in North Wales. The 3rd year will consist of on‑site training at Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm operated from Grimsby.
About the role
A comprehensive learning programme includes classroom‑based learning and on‑site experience with technicians. Completion will result in an NVQ Level 3 qualification in Wind Turbine Operations and Maintenance and a Level 3 Diploma in Wind Turbine Maintenance.
Technicians work as part of a small team for specific offshore wind farms. Qualified candidates will learn to carry out all aspects of wind turbine maintenance including scheduled, unscheduled, innovative, and troubleshooting maintenance.
Responsibilities include:
- Electro/Mechanical problem solving of wind turbines while working in small teams at height in remote locations using user manuals as reference.
- Working with advanced mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment safely.
- Planning tools, spares and materials in advance for each job.
- Fault finding and diagnosis of wind turbine main components to determine if site repair is possible or the unit requires exchange.
- Ongoing personal development and training to become a multi‑skilled technician covering inspection, maintenance and repair of turbines.
Candidate requirements
You will be keen to learn and undertake a practical role. Due to the high complexity of the role, standby or on call may be required.
Job requirements and experience
- 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at 4/C or above including Science, Maths and English.
- Willing to learn and develop.
- Able to work at height.
- Able to work at sea.
- Willing to work shifts.
- Must live within an hour of site.
All apprentices will be expected to study full time for the first 2 years at Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl in North Wales during term time, before being deployed at Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm in Grimsby for the 3rd year for direct experience of working on a wind farm.

Accommodation/Travel
Term‑time accommodation will be provided with the costs of rent and utilities paid by RWE. The cost of commute to college each day will also be paid unless group travel is provided. During term time there will be a weekly allowance for food and drink while away from home.
Travel to the assessment centre
All reasonable travel costs for invited candidates will be paid by RWE. This will be discussed with you upon invitation.
Holidays
25 days (to be taken outside of term time), plus public holidays.
