Job Summary
The post holder will be responsible for providing an ultrasound service comprising unsupervised scanning sessions. These may take place at community sites for AQP contracts or in hospitals for Trust contracts.
Responsibilities- Undertake a range of ultrasound examinations in accordance with DHCs, local, regional and national guidelines, practising unsupervised.
- Provide a full ultrasound scanning and reporting service within your scope of practice, using analytical and judgemental skills to interpret images and produce independent written examination reports, with recommendations for further scans, assessment or referral where necessary.
- When working on Trust sites, be familiar with and adhere to Trust protocols and policies.
- Request radiologist review of proposed reports where clinically appropriate and review the final report as part of the commitment to CPD.
- Deliver high standards of patient care in a safe, clean and tidy environment, observing all Diagnostic Healthcare/Trust policies and maintaining the highest professional and personal standards.
- Manage clinic sessions effectively, working with the Diagnostic Imaging Assistant to provide a timely and professional service for each patient.
- Support the DIA with machine set‑up, PACS upload, and any other tasks required to ensure the smooth running of the clinic.
- Manage unpredictable patient demands, including difficult or emotionally distressed patients or relatives, who may be potentially aggressive.
- Contribute to the training in ultrasound of others, as agreed with the Clinical Regional Lead Sonographer, including radiographers, radiology registrars and other medical staff and HCPCs (on approved training programmes).
- Play an active role in audit and clinical governance activities as directed by the Clinical Regional Ultrasound Manager.
- Commit to lifelong learning and produce evidence of CPD, maintaining ‘fitness to practice’.
- Participate in the annual appraisal process.
- Remain up-to-date with changes and current trends in medical ultrasound.
- Maintain the highest personal, professional and ultrasonographic standards.
- Adhere to Diagnostic Healthcare and NHS Health and Safety Policies, and use any equipment or personal protective equipment provided safely.
- Promote the DHC philosophy of equality and diversity.
- Respond to the needs of the company and patients as necessary.
- Be prepared to work flexibly to meet service demands.
- Provide highly complex and sensitive information.
- Impart this information in a sensitive and empathetic manner so that the patient can understand.
- Act upon complex information received from referrers and communicate effectively with them.
- Deal sympathetically with distressed patients.
- Must hold a professional qualification, either the DMU or PGC/D in medical ultrasound imaging and relevant professional registration (eg HCPC).
- Must be HCPC, RCT, NMC or GMC registered.
- A minimum of 3 years experience as a sonographer (desirable).
Applicants must have current UK professional registration. This position requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
