Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced healthcare assistant to join our friendly team for 29.5 hours a week. The position is temporary for a ten‑month period, with the potential for extension. The successful candidate will have a fixed shift pattern working Monday 08:30‑18:30 and Tuesday to Friday 13:30‑18:30; applicants should also be flexible with time to cover sickness, holidays and Extended Access, Monday to Friday 8am‑8pm and weekends 9am‑1.30pm.
Responsibilities- Phlebotomy, blood pressure checks, diet and lifestyle advice, weight management, Over‑75 health checks, NHS and new patient health checks, ECGs, smoking cessation, B12 injections, provision of flu clinics, INR testing, and tasks supporting process and procedures in the practice relating to anticoagulation management under the supervision of nurses/GPs.
- Assisting with minor surgery and coil fittings, hypertension annual health checks, spirometry, basic dressings, removal of sutures and clips, act as a chaperone, CVD risk assessment checks, diabetic foot examinations, ear syringing, microsuction, compression bandaging and dopplers according to skills and competence.
- Support and monitor patients during nebulisation therapy and undertake spirometry under indirect supervision.
- Assist regulated professionals while patients are undergoing minor surgery, and assist with coil fittings/IUCD/contraceptive implants as required.
- Provide health promotion activities (e.g., smoking, exercise and diet), assess patient readiness to change and offer motivational support.
- Administer influenza and pneumococcal vaccine and B12 injections under indirect supervision, and gain knowledge to administer basic life support or adrenaline if necessary.
- Record information and activities accurately using manual or computer systems, maintain confidentiality, and use Read codes for patient information retrieval.
- Adhere to personal security systems, infection control procedures, and health and safety policies, including reporting risks, handling sharps, and managing chemical hazards.
- Ensure stock items are ordered correctly, conduct monthly stock checks, and support clinical governance and quality improvement.
- GCSE grade A‑C or 9‑4 in Maths and English or equivalent
- Immunisation accredited training certificate
- Phlebotomy qualification
- Up‑to‑date basic life support and resuscitation
- Care Certificate
- HCA course
- Diabetes foundation
- Diabetes foot checks
- 2 years experience working within general practice or other healthcare environment
- Phlebotomy experience
- Computer/keyboard skills
- Experience working under indirect supervision
- Experience working under PSD
- Understanding of accountability and delegation issues
- Clinical skills and competencies relevant to the role
- Experience working in a primary care GP practice
- Knowledge of Quality and Outcomes Framework (QoF)
- Flu vaccination programme experience
