You’ll lead the delivery of high‑quality, person‑centred communication and dysphagia support across the region, while supervising a qualified SaLT at the hospital site, two regional assistants and a Speech and Language Therapy Apprentice.

As the Regional Lead, you will provide a highly specialist standard of assessment and intervention for adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex presentations. You will manage a varied and challenging caseload, working collaboratively with the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure care is responsive, recovery‑focused and aligned with evidence‑based practice. At times, you will take the clinical lead within the MDT alongside other regional leads.

A key part of your role will be delivering expert dysphagia assessment and management at an advanced specialist level, including supporting mental capacity assessments and best‑interest processes. You will also contribute to service development by embedding evaluation, quality improvement and clinical impact measures into routine practice across all settings.

As a senior clinician, you will support and supervise junior staff, promote high‑quality care across teams, and represent the SLT service at local and regional forums such as Governance, Senior Management Team meetings and Quality Improvement groups.

Key Accountabilities:

  • To provide a highly specialist standard of Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) assessment and intervention to people within the service area and other local settings as required.
  • To participate fully with the multi-disciplinary team in managing a complex clinical caseload ensuring high standards of care that is aligned to aid their recovery, flexible to the needs of the person using evidence based / person centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate intervention. This includes on occasion taking the leadership role within the clinical team in collaboration with other regional leads.
  • To contribute to the continued development of a high-quality therapeutic service and embed the evaluation of impact into practice, across all settings and at an operational level.
  • To provide highly specialist dysphagia assessment and intervention to service users, utilising competencies and experience at an advanced expert practitioner level. This will include facilitating mental capacity assessment and best interest meetings as needed.
  • Maintain and evidence standards of competence as defined by the HCPC and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • To supervise junior staff including qualified and assistants and wider colleagues as required.
  • Provision of SLT advice and consultation to others involved in service user’s care.

    As an autonomous practitioner, he/she will be responsible for their own work and interventions and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies. This may also include supporting others to deliver high standards of care within the service.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Registration with the HCPC as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • 5 years’ experience or more working as a HCPC Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Experience (either pretraining on training or subsequently) of working with people with Learning Disability, Autism, mental health issues, trauma, and other complex needs.
  • Experience of supporting junior staff including assistants and students.
  • Experience of leading on service and policy developments.
  • Clinical therapy skills – experience in using High and Low Tech AAC, Makaton, Total Communication, Intensive Interaction, Sensory needs and differences, and other Learning Disability and Autism relevant approaches.
