Medical Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist

An opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, based at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital and the Community Diagnostic Centre (Freshney Place, Grimsby), for a Medical Laboratory Assistant / Phlebotomist position.

  • 1 x 18 hour per week position
  • 1 x 30 hour per week position

This role supports the Pathology Department and the Phlebotomy Service at DPoW and Grimsby CDC. Candidates should enjoy a varied workload and have experience in computer data input, current IT skills, literacy and numeracy. A GCSE Grade C/4 or above in Mathematics and English is advantageous, as is prior laboratory or healthcare experience and familiarity with medical terminology.

Shift pattern
  • 18 hour: three 6‑hour shifts (08:00‑14:00 or 14:00‑20:00).
  • 30 hour: five 6‑hour shifts (08:00‑14:00 or 14:00‑20:00).
  • Both positions require participation in the out‑of‑hours rota, including late shifts, weekends and bank holidays.
Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as part of the multidisciplinary Blood Sciences laboratory team at DPoW Hospital and Grimsby CDC, following appropriate training and competency completion.

Roles include:

  • Processing and analysis of laboratory samples.
  • Collecting blood samples from patients following phlebotomy training.
  • Entering patient requests onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Assisting in the phlebotomy service for inpatients and outpatients.
Key responsibilities
  • Receipt and processing of pathology samples.
  • Accurate use of calibrated pipettes.
  • Loading, unloading, and filing samples.
  • Housekeeping duties and maintaining Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
  • Handling referred work to and from other laboratories.
  • Communicating results and responding to queries via telephone and other methods.
Person Specification Education and Qualifications
  • Good standard of literacy and numeracy.
  • Evidence of good IT skills.
  • GCSE or equivalent qualification in 3 subjects, including science.
  • Other science or healthcare related qualification.
Occupational Experience
  • Experience in the NHS or a caring environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive work.
  • Previous use of analytical / diagnostic equipment.
  • Overall suitability for the post.
