Overview
The Radiological Engineering (RE) Supervisor will be responsible for a team of radiological engineers, providing radiological oversight of nuclear work in the Groton Shipyard and at the Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department (NRMD) at the New London SUBASE. The successful candidate will collaborate daily with Nuclear Operations, Nuclear Test, Audit & Assessment, Radiological Controls personnel, Nuclear Engineering as well as other Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant activities, local customer representatives (NRRO, RPCO, SUPSHIP), Squadron and Ship's Force.
The group’s products may include: executing radioactive material shipments, oversight of the mixed waste program, providing deck plate support and oversight of radiological work in the Shipyard and at NRMD, maintenance and support of the Radiological Deficiency Report (RDR) system, supporting the RE continuous training program & the RE initial qualification program, and ensuring NNPP Principles and NAVSEA 389-0228 requirements are met.
Personnel also support other radiological engineering functions, such as: preparing radiological control agreements with Ships Force and Maintenance Activities, maintaining the radiological status of ships, assisting in the development of exposure estimates and goals, etc.
- Ship and receive radioactive material and waste in accordance with 49 CFR Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) standards
- Coordinate with other NNPP shipyards and labs to maintain and improve corporate radiological controls procedures
- Ensure procedural and record retention compliance
- The development and review of methods and procedures to ensure radiological controls maintain personnel exposure as low as reasonably achievable
- Preparing radiological controls agreements, maintaining the radiological status of ships or facilities, and assisting in the development of exposure estimates and shielding goals
- Providing deck-plate support and oversight of radiological work in the shipyard and at the Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department (NRMD)
- Coordinating with other naval nuclear shipyards to maintain and improve corporate radiological controls procedures
- Investigating, preventing, andmitigating radiological problems
- Providing technical support for Radiological Operations
- Lead special projects and problem investigations
- Promote Innovation and Process Improvement
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related field
- 5 years of experience in technical/engineering function
- The selected candidate will be required to qualify as a supervisor of Radiological Engineers in accordance with Article 109 (Radiological Controls)
- The selected candidate will be required to qualify as a DOT/NRC Radioactive Material Shipper
- The selected candidate will be required to qualify as a radiation worker
Preferred:
- DOT hazardous and / or radioactive materials shipping certification
- Nuclear or radiological controls engineering experience
- Shipyard and/or construction engineering support / nuclear/radiological experience
Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and self-critical
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment as both a leader and contributor
- Competent in directing, developing, motivating, and managing a group of engineers
