Position Overview

Coordinates and supports a team of Camp Team Leads and Camp Counsellors in the planning and delivery of dynamic recreation programs, including planning and conducting training, monitoring camp programs, supervising and supporting summer camp staff, and addressing various operational needs. Takes a lead role in ensuring clear and effective communication among camp participants, parents/guardians, camps staff and volunteers, and a greater Recreation Services team.

At times, this role may be required to work within a specific camp; must be able to engage and participate in all activities (including swimming in up to chest deep water).

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Takes the lead role in coordinating summer camp staff training, including scheduling, content creation, delivery and evaluation.
  • In advance of program delivery, reviews and approves each camp’s weekly program schedule.
  • Assigns shifts and work locations to Camp Counsellors to meet staffing shortfalls due to staff absence or increased participant need.
  • Provides coaching and mentorship to Camp Team Leads and Camp Counsellors.
  • Visits each site regularly; is available to support each site through problem-solving as required.
  • Monitor and answer the camp phone during camp hours. Provides follow‑up to pertinent people as required.
  • Addresses and responds appropriately to situations or concerns identified by participants, parents/guardians, or Camp Team Leads. Escalates to Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor as required.
  • Reviews site safety checks; identifies methods to address safety concerns.
  • Creates payroll schedule; reviews and submits time sheets for all camp staff.
  • With direction from the Recreation Coordinator, updates Guidelines and Procedures Manual.
  • Ensures the Guidelines and Procedures Manual are adhered to by all camp staff, follow‑ups with individuals as required.
  • Provides an end of summer Camp Report using feedback from the camp team.
  • Attends all required training sessions.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Experience working in a summer day camp environment, preferably in a leadership role
  • Outgoing, enthusiastic and engaging personality
  • Ability to work at various locations across the city
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to provide a positive, respectful and enjoyable space for all individuals
  • Valid CPR Level C and Standard First Aid (or willing to obtain upon hiring), must be valid for employment duration
  • A satisfactory Police Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check is required dated after the time of offer and before the first day of camp programs
  • A valid Class G or G2 driver’s license with two years driving experience and a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their license is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code…
