Position Overview

City of Guelph Recreation offers a variety of recreation programs for people of all ages and abilities in weekly sessions throughout the year. Our Inclusion Support Program matches participants living with disabilities with program staff to provide support and assistance while participating in City of Guelph recreational programs and aquatics. The program helps participants reach personal goals, increase self-confidence, and allows for a positive and safe environment to enjoy recreational programming.

Hours of Work

This is a part-time position, scheduled for up to 20 hours per week. Shift duration varies, may include evenings and weekends, and is dependent on programming needs. Hours of work and shift duration will be scheduled during these time frames.

Depending on programming needs and registrations, different Recreation Services locations within Guelph may be required.

Key Duties And Responsibilities
  • Utilize behaviour management and program adaptation strategies to support individuals with varying needs and abilities in recreation programming and aquatics.
  • Using a positive and supportive approach; develop a rapport with participants and leverage their unique strengths.
  • Assist with the communication of skills directed by the Instructors and Recreation Programmers.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Provide support for participants with disabilities, who need assistance integrating into recreation activities.
  • Assist with all aspects of programming including creating/adapting activities to meet the needs of participants, as well as set up/take down.
  • Complete administrative tasks; all forms and documents.
  • Communicate with the program team, and participant’s support worker/caregivers, as appropriate.
  • Respect and maintain participant confidentiality.
  • Maintain proper communication between all parties involved, including parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • Complete and attend all mandatory City of Guelph training and meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Requirements
  • Experience working in a recreation setting.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to respect and maintain participant confidentiality.
  • A satisfactory Police Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Previous experience with program planning, development, and implementation.
  • Previous experience with program adaptation and modification
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and in a team environment.
  • Adaptable, patient and innovative approach to work.
  • Able to work at various locations across the city.
  • Valid CRP Level C certification and Standard First Aid (or willing to obtain upon hiring).
Rate of Pay

$18.73 per hour
