Job Description

A Service Fitter is responsible for inspections, service, repair and preventative maintenance of installed fire protection systems such as wet, dry, pre‑action, suppression systems, fire pumps and backflow devices.

  • Inspections
    • Inspect systems to ensure they are free of damage or leaks and provide adequate protection.
    • Provide detailed deficiency reports with solutions and material lists.
    • Apply comprehensive knowledge of system operation to troubleshoot on‑site issues and resolve them quickly.
    • Navigate on‑site issues, manage time efficiently, and ensure a thorough inspection.
    • Ensure inspections meet fire codes and customer/insurance/authority requirements.
  • Wet Systems
    • Weekly, monthly, bi‑monthly, quarterly, semi‑annual, and annual testing of control valves, low‑pressure switches, pressure switches, flow switches, main drains, and water supply.
    • Inspect alarm valves, trim, piping, hangers, sprinkler heads, and FDCs.
  • Dry Systems
    • Weekly, monthly, bi‑monthly, quarterly, semi‑annual, and annual testing of dripping test cylinders, accelerator reset, dry valve reset, and trip testing.
    • Inspect compressors and identify maintenance requirements.
  • Preaction/Deluge Systems
    • Weekly, monthly, bi‑monthly, quarterly, semi‑annual, and annual testing of drum drains, solenoids, pneumatic actuators, and other releasing devices.
    • Ensure proper sequencing of FA and pre‑action devices.
    • Inspect compressors and identify maintenance requirements.
    • Reset valves after testing.
  • Fire Pumps/Standpipe
    • Weekly checks for diesel pumps and monthly checks for electric pumps, confirming controller operation, safety features, gauge pressures, fluid levels, relief valve condition, and circulation relief.
    • Annual full performance testing with flow meter or testing equipment.
    • Record pump readings and driver data.
    • Adjust relief valves to ensure proper flow readings.
    • Diagnose performance or driver issues.
    • Ensure pump installation meets current requirements and recommend upgrades (TSSA, test headers, piping arrangements, etc.).
    • Conduct standpipe flow tests during annual inspections to verify flow and pressure requirements.
  • Deficiencies for all system types
    • Service fitter must be comfortable servicing and repairing all fire protection equipment.
    • Relocate and add sprinkler heads.
    • Repair or modify system piping.
    • Replace system components and complete internal valve and pipe assessments.
    • Perform hydrostatic testing on FDCs and air‑loss testing on dry/pre‑action systems.
    • Provide thorough solutions and materials as needed.
  • Service Work
    • Attend a wide range of service calls to diagnose issues with various system components.
    • Identify effective solutions and complete repairs promptly.
    • Communicate with customers to ensure quality service.
    • Be available on call for designated after‑hours periods.
Qualifications
  • Member of Local 853 in good standing.
  • Sprinkler service experience is an asset.
  • At least 2 years of service van experience.
  • Valid 427‑A Journeyperson license (Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer).
  • Can work with provided hardware and software.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Perform physical labor, carrying and moving equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Work above head and in unusual or challenging positions (ladders, scaffolding, high‑lift equipment, ducts, crawl spaces, over ceilings).
  • Read and understand construction blueprints, diagrams, and specifications.
  • Work flexible hours/on‑call duties.
  • Adhere to, implement, and follow safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, positive attitude, and a quick learning ability.
