GeneralPurpose
The Centre for Advancing Responsible and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (CARE-AI) is the primary AI research centre at U of G and is also involved in AI-related academic programs, training, entrepreneurship, strategy and delivering AI solutions. CARE-AI is expanding its capacity to develop and deliver machine learning models, agents and applications that support research, operations, academics and the enterprise mission of the university.
We are committed to delivering systems that do not amplify or perpetuate pre‑existing biases. We support a collaborative team culture based on inclusivity and the operationalization of AI ethics, including sustainability.
Reporting to the Managing Director, CARE‑AI, the AI Developer designs, builds and deploys machine learning models, AI tools, agents and apps that range from proofs of concept to production‑level products. As a development‑focused rather than a research role, this position requires rapid iteration and the delivery of clean, maintainable and efficient code. The developer will engage with diverse stakeholders to translate business problems into technical requirements, while providing technical expertise and training.
This role will have an additional emphasis on converting projects into content that could be developed into advanced training material. Candidates must demonstrate adaptability to emerging approaches and technologies and a commitment to keeping pace with developments in the field.
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or related field with specific knowledge of machine learning.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a formal software development environment with an emphasis on AI/ML.
- Demonstrated ability to produce working software and models rapidly in an agile environment.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++.
- Experience integrating RESTful APIs and standard LLM interfaces, such as OpenAI‑compatible endpoints.
- Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning algorithms.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as Tensor Flow, PyTorch, or JAX.
- Solid understanding of software design principles, algorithms, and data structures to enable full‑stack development, including basic UI/UX design.
- Ability to develop AI solutions that reflect ethical and inclusive practices and collaborate effectively in diverse teams.
- CARE‑AI values inclusive innovation. Candidates should demonstrate awareness of ethical AI principles and commitment to equity and diversity in technology.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and containerization technologies.
- Experience with model serving and local inference tools, such as vLLM or Ollama.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and MLOps/Dev Ops practices.
- Experience supporting on‑premises hardware, high‑speed networking and systems administration.
CARE‑AI values equity, diversity, and inclusion as essential to excellence. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and will provide accommodations during the recruitment process.
At the University of Guelph, fostering a culture of inclusion is an institutional imperative. The University invites and encourages applications from all qualified individuals, including from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in employment, who may contribute to further diversification of our Institution.
