The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life‑changing education and research. It is ambitious and has a bold vision of shaping itself into one of the best universities in the world.

This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of the founding team of the new Medical School and to have a central role in the School’s accreditation process. The innovative programme aims to produce a new type of doctor – excellent and holistic clinicians who can drive change, delivering integrated and technologically advanced healthcare for their patients and communities. The School is part of The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, which has a ‘One Health’ ethos that promotes understanding of a ‘whole society’ approach to health and builds on our aims to develop truly interprofessional training.

The

role

The successful candidate will focus on delivering high‑quality teaching throughout our medical undergraduate curriculum, including biomedical science, physiology, general medicine and specialities. The first year of the course is structured in themes, based around clinical cases, enabling students to learn clinically relevant biomedical science as the foundation for subsequent years of clinical rotations. Subsequent years are based around clinical rotations in specialised themes, with university base days to ensure core content, clinical skills and professionalism learning outcomes are achieved.

You will support students in small and large group teaching (including case‑based learning), contribute to clinical and communication skills sessions, simulation‑based teaching and eventually also teach students in other years of the course. The role will also include contributing to our admissions process, standard setting, writing knowledge tests and OSCEs and supporting OSCE examining. The position will be offered at either Lecturer A or B level depending on experience (see job profile below for further details).

The full‑time equivalent salary range for Lecturer A starts at £37,694 and Lecturer B starts at £47,389 (pro rata for 0.7 FTE).

About You

To join our new School, you’ll need to be a forward‑looking, collaborative and adaptable individual with a ‘can‑do’ attitude and the ambition to drive innovation in medical education. You’ll have full registration with the GMC, a higher professional qualification (usually a doctoral degree or equivalent) and may hold a Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy or Academy of Medical Educators. You will also have experience of providing high‑quality teaching and good knowledge of medical education principles and practices (including course accreditation, quality assurance processes and knowledge of the professional requirements of the GMC).

Finally, as an excellent communicator, you’ll have the ability to use tact, diplomacy and empathy to build effective working relationships at all levels.
