Clinical Nurse Specialist Inflammatory Bowel Disease (maternity cover)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time nurse to join our Inflammatory Bowel Disease nurse specialist team, within the Gastroenterology department, at The Royal Surrey County Hospital. This is a 12 month fixed term contract to cover maternity leave; our team supports patients with a diagnosis of Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis throughout their diagnosis journey. These are remitting and relapsing chronic diseases, our patients often require prompt review if they are experiencing a relapse in their symptoms.

Previous experience in gastroenterology will be an advantage but is not essential as you will be fully supported and trained in managing our patients. You will also be supported to undertake study to enhance your knowledge of inflammatory bowel disease if you do not already hold this qualification.

We are looking for someone who has excellent organisational and communication skills. You must be able to cope well under pressure. You should enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team and be confident liaising with patients, general practitioners and referring hospitals.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job will include working independently and as part of the multi-disciplinary team managing a caseload of patients, in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

You must have excellent communication skills, as you will spend a lot of your working day reviewing patients via telephone and liaising with parent consultants.

The role of the IBD nurse includes; telephone clinic reviews, managing an advice line, attending weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, immunosuppression therapy monitoring, liaising with pharmacy & homecare teams and supporting patients, relatives and other medical professionals in the area of IBD.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work autonomously within the multi-disciplinary team assisting the Gastroenterology Consultants in Inpatient and Outpatient management of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The post holder will have responsibility for the assessment, planning and organisation of a broad range of activities and programmes of care, and the development, implementation and evaluation of individualised care needs.

The post holder will participate in clinical audit in this specialised area, ensuring development and progression of practices and guidelines within this environment.

The post holder will be accountable for their nursing practices delivered to the patient and will be responsible for their own professional development, adhering to the policies and protocol of the Trust and the regulatory body for the nurse (NMC).
