Community Payback is a way of helping to create better outcomes for offenders and improve communities. As a Community Payback supervisor, you’ll be at the heart of this work, leading teams of people doing a wide variety of unpaid community service work. You’ll help them make the most of their time on Community Payback and to get their lives back on track through helping them learn new skills to increase their chances of employment and reduce their likelihood of reoffending.

You’ll supervise and motivate them to complete a range of manual tasks to pay back for the harm they’ve caused. These tasks could include clearing overgrowth, restoring facilities such as sports halls and playgrounds, planting trees or laying flowerbeds, litter picking and graffiti removal.

You’ll be helping offenders to:

• make positive changes to local communities
• access training and development to learn new skills
• improve their chances of employment as they make changes in their own lives

On a typical day, you’ll spend up to 7 hours supervising a group of offenders on a Community Payback project.

You can expect to drive a van or minibus to transport people and equipment, and to brief people on probation ahead of each task. You’ll demonstrate good practice and ensure tasks are completed to a high standard. Often collaborating with partner organisations, you’ll need to be aware of the visible, public nature of the role.

You’ll be working with a diverse mix of individuals, so it’s important that you’re empathetic, a good communicator, and happy to take the lead.

It’s all about supporting offenders on their journey and making your community a better place. Whether that’s building benches or cleaning the streets, you’re there because you genuinely want to help people.

Every day brings new challenges in this varied and meaningful role, so you’ll be someone who relishes solving problems in the workplace. The Community Payback supervisor role is accommodated to people on probation who work or have caring responsibilities. Community Payback projects run 7 days a week and some during the evening, therefore you will:

• work frequent weekends, and you may be asked to cover some evenings
• be paid a higher rate for any evening and weekend days you do work

There may be a chance to work part-time in some regions. You can discuss this at your interview.

A full manual driving licence is essential, alongside good organisation, leadership, and basic IT skills.

You’ll also acquire a wide range of transferable skills, including coaching and mentoring.
