The Role

Job Title: Senior RF & Electromagnetics Engineer

The Senior RF and Electromagnetics Engineer will design, test, characterize, and optimize RF coils and associated analog electronics for the low MHz frequency domain. Secondary to this, they may contribute significantly to the electromagnetic subsystem of the ultra-low-field MRI system, including B0 magnet and gradient system. They will develop manufacturing and design verification processes to ensure manufactured products meet design goals with efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

This Senior Engineer will be expected to conduct research and development activities independently when needed, collaborate cross-functionally, and provide guidance to junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and development efforts related to radio-frequency coils, sensors, preamplifiers, and analog circuitry for portable MRI applications.
  • Simulate, test, and optimize coil and RF electronics designs.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with systems engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, MR scientists, product management and senior leadership to ensure seamless integration of RF and electromagnetic subsystems.
  • Develop and validate novel hardware-based EM-noise reduction methods for ultra-low-field MRI.
  • Partner with vendors and manufacturing teams to guide electromagnetic system prototyping, assembly, production scale-up and QA processes.
  • Document designs, models, and tools in accordance with the company’s quality system requirements.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Contribute to research and development efforts related to low-field magnet, gradient coil, and shield design for portable MRI applications.
  • Develop and validate novel magnet characterization methods, including field mapping, eddy-current mapping and thermal stability assessments.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong background in the theory of electromagnetism.
  • Working knowledge of analog circuit design and prototyping.
  • Experience with radio-frequency circuits and phased array design.
  • Strong understanding of RF principles including coil design, signal transmission, and pre-amplifiers.
  • Experience of physics-based modeling with appropriate mathematical tools.
  • Ability to critically assess research papers and patents on topics relating to MRI hardware, magneto statics, and RF engineering.
  • Experience with data acquisition and automation.
  • Familiarity with lab equipment like oscilloscope/VNA.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge transfer.
Required Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering physics, or electrical engineering and 5 years’ related work experience; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g., Master’s degree with 3 years’ experience or a PhD degree in a relevant field).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Research or work experience in MRI, experimental atomic physics, experimental quantum computing, plasma physics, radio astronomy, or accelerator science.
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools, such as COMSOL, ANSYS Maxwell, CST/Opera, etc.
  • Ability to design mechanical parts, including 3D CAD modeling and creating engineering drawings for fabrication.
  • Experience with mechanical prototyping such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and use of lathe and milling machines.
  • Working knowledge of MRI system architecture.
  • Programming with Python
