Salary: $51,241.47 - $62,831.80

Must be 21 years of age or older to be a Patrol Officer

Per Mississippi State Statute 21-31-63: Any applicant for a position of any kind under civil service must be a citizen of the United States and an elector of the county in which he resides and must meet only such bona fide occupational residency requirements as may be determined by the civil service commission or the governing authority of the municipality.

Position Overview

The Police Patrol Officer is responsible for performing general duty law enforcement work to ensure the safety and security of the community. This includes protecting life and property, preventing crime, conducting investigations, apprehending offenders, and maintaining public order. Officers enforce local, state, and federal laws and ordinances while building positive community relationships, responding to emergencies, and providing assistance to the public.

The role requires sound judgment, integrity, and a commitment to upholding the law with fairness and professionalism. This position is classified as a Essential personnel classification for Emergency Response. This means that during an emergency response this position is required to report directly after an emergency. Essential status is defined as employees whose duties are vital to maintain basic municipal functions during an emergency.

Job Functions

Essential job duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following:

  • Patrols assigned areas on foot or in a police vehicle to preserve public safety, deter criminal activity, and maintain law and order.
  • Prevents, detects, and responds to criminal activity while enforcing traffic, parking, and other applicable regulations.
  • Responds to emergency and service calls, including fires, traffic accidents, robberies, and other incidents involving misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations by interviewing witnesses, gathering statements, and collecting evidence and relevant information.
  • Apprehends and arrests offenders, secures witness cooperation, and provides sworn testimony in court proceedings.
  • Investigates criminal cases by searching for and preserving evidence, questioning suspects and witnesses, monitoring pawn shops, and conducting surveillance of suspected criminal operations.
  • Transports and escorts prisoners to and from court, ensures secure custody, and participates in the extradition of fugitives from other jurisdictions.
  • · Provides information and assistance to the public, offering guidance on laws, ordinances, and community resources.
  • All other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor, manager, director or mayor.
