Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist — Singing River Gulfport | Part-Time | 7am-7pm rotating weekends and holidays

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT) evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing and performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. He/She verifies the accuracy of results before reporting; reports test results in a timely manner according to protocol. The MLS/MT performs maintenance and calibration on instruments and equipment, troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur.
He/She complies with universal precautions, safety procedures, and exposure control plans for blood borne and airborne pathogens. The MLS/MT may perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger sticks, and bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient.
The MLS/MT must have in-depth knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments. They should demonstrate attention to detail, skill in operating laboratory equipment, and the ability to work with others across departments. They must recognize that errors can have serious consequences for patients.

EducationBachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or related scientific discipline required by CLIA.
CertificationRegistered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) at (or within 1 year) of job start.
Experience1 year experience preferred
Physical DemandsWork involves standing, turning, bending, stooping, lifting, climbing, and other physical motions. Extended standing/walking may be required. Manual dexterity and good visual acuity are required to manage equipment and observe patient assessment data. May occasionally be exposed to hazardous environments, body fluids, sputum, tissues, hazardous chemicals, and infectious disease.
Mental DemandsDemonstrate keen mental faculties for assessment and decision making. Clear communication skills in person and by telephone. Emotional stability to work under stress and meet deadlines.
